Why It Matters

Our planet is facing an unprecedented environmental crisis. Climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and resource depletion are threatening ecosystems, human health, and the global economy. If we do not act now, future generations will inherit a world with extreme weather, food and water shortages, and irreversible damage to nature.

Climate change is one of the most urgent threats to our planet. The Earth’s temperature has already increased by 1.2°C since the Industrial Revolution, and if it exceeds 1.5°C, scientists warn that we may reach an irreversible tipping point. Rising global temperatures are leading to more intense and frequent heatwaves, droughts, and wildfires. Sea levels are rising and could displace 600 million people by the end of the century. Stronger hurricanes, storms, and flooding are affecting millions of people worldwide. In 2023 alone, extreme weather events caused over 250 billion dollars in damages globally. The most vulnerable communities are already suffering, with entire regions at risk of becoming uninhabitable. To combat climate change, we promote renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable urban planning to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate its effects.

Biodiversity loss is another major environmental crisis. The world has lost over 69 percent of wildlife populations since 1970. One million species are currently at risk of extinction. More than 75 percent of land environments and 66 percent of ocean ecosystems have been significantly altered by human activities. Deforestation is destroying an area equivalent to 30 football fields per minute, reducing the planet’s ability to absorb carbon dioxide and contributing to climate change. Biodiversity is essential for food production, clean air and water, and a stable climate. The decline of pollinators like bees and butterflies threatens 75 percent of global food crops. If biodiversity loss continues at this rate, it will lead to ecosystem collapse, affecting food security, human health, and livelihoods. To protect biodiversity, we support reforestation, habitat restoration, and sustainable agricultural practices.

Pollution and waste are causing severe damage to ecosystems and human health. The world generates over 2 billion tons of waste annually, and plastic pollution is one of the biggest threats to the environment. Every year, more than 400 million tons of plastic are produced, and 11 million tons of plastic waste enter the ocean, harming marine life. Microplastics have been found in food, water, and even human blood. Air pollution is another major environmental threat, causing the deaths of 7 million people annually due to respiratory diseases and cardiovascular conditions. Industrial pollution, deforestation, and unsustainable farming practices are also degrading soil and water quality. To address these issues, we advocate for sustainable waste management, plastic reduction, and clean air initiatives to protect both the environment and public health.

Water scarcity is becoming an increasingly critical global issue. Forty percent of the world’s population faces water shortages, and by 2025, nearly two-thirds of the global population may experience water stress. The over-extraction of groundwater for agriculture and industry, combined with climate change-induced droughts and shrinking freshwater sources, is leading to an unsustainable water crisis. Pollution is further contaminating rivers, lakes, and groundwater, reducing access to safe drinking water. Without immediate action, water scarcity could lead to conflicts, food crises, and mass displacement. Agriculture alone accounts for 70 percent of global freshwater use, making it essential to adopt more efficient and sustainable water management practices. To help address this challenge, we promote water conservation, rainwater harvesting, and policies that protect freshwater resources.

Environmental degradation is not a distant threat; it is happening now. Every action taken today will determine the quality of life for future generations. At Persephone Environmental Development Association, we are committed to raising awareness through education and advocacy, supporting sustainable development projects and climate action initiatives, empowering communities to implement environmentally friendly solutions, and partnering with international organizations to drive policy change.

Everyone has a role to play in protecting the environment. Small daily actions can make a big difference. Reducing plastic waste, recycling responsibly, supporting renewable energy, and participating in local conservation projects are all ways to contribute to a healthier planet. The time to act is now, and together we can build a sustainable and environmentally conscious future for all.
