The Erasmus+ KA152 Youth Exchange project “Roots of Sustainability” (Project No: 2025-1-TR01-KA152-YOU-000299086) was implemented in Kastamonu, Türkiye, between 01.02.2026 and 08.02.2026 by Kastamonu Kalkınma Sağlık Çevre Eğitim ve Turizm Vakfı in partnership with Persephone Environmental Development Association. The project brought together young participants from Turkey, Georgia, Germany, Austria, and Denmark with the aim of strengthening environmental awareness, promoting sustainable behaviors, and encouraging intercultural cooperation through non-formal education activities focused on recycling, climate action, and active citizenship.
To begin the process with motivation and engagement, participants took part in an interactive energy-boosting activity designed to develop creativity, attention, and communication skills. In this game, participants acted out different roles such as astronaut, waiter, or secret agent through miming and body language, while others tried to guess the character. This activity helped participants overcome communication barriers, increase group trust, and build confidence in expressing themselves non-verbally. It also created a dynamic learning environment that encouraged spontaneity, laughter, and stronger group cohesion.
One of the key educational components of the project was the exploration of global recycling practices through presentations and discussions on leading nations in waste management. Participants examined how countries such as Germany, Austria, and others implement effective recycling systems and environmental policies. Through peer presentations and collaborative learning, participants improved their research, public speaking, and critical thinking skills. This activity deepened their understanding of global environmental challenges and inspired them to reflect on how similar practices could be adapted in their own countries.
The project also included hands-on environmental and cultural learning experiences such as recycling workshops, stakeholder visits, and a city exploration of Kastamonu. Participants engaged in practical environmental actions while also discovering historical and cultural landmarks like Nasrullah Mosque, Kastamonu Castle, and the UNESCO-listed Mahmut Bey Mosque. Visiting the Municipality Climate Change and Zero Waste Directorate allowed them to connect theory with real-life environmental policies. These experiences strengthened their observation skills, intercultural awareness, and understanding of sustainable urban development.
The final stage of the project focused on environmental action and reflection through a clean-up initiative and farewell event. Participants actively contributed to nature by collecting waste in a public area, demonstrating responsibility and environmental citizenship. Later, they evaluated the entire project through analytical reflection and shared feedback, while also receiving their Youthpass certificates. This final process reinforced their learning journey, encouraged critical thinking about sustainability, and strengthened their sense of responsibility toward environmental protection and community engagement.
